‘Quite severe’: Elderly man, 87, dies after alleged attack while on morning walk in Noosa Heads
A 27-year-old man is in custody following an alleged attack that left an elderly man dead in a popular holiday hotspot.
A 87-year-old man has died after he was allegedly assaulted during his morning walk in a popular holiday destination in Queensland.
Emergency crews were called after reports a man was found unconscious after an alleged assaulted on Hastings St in Noosa Heads about 6am on Sunday.
The elderly man died at the scene shortly after paramedics arrived.
A 27-year-old man is in custody, and assisting police with their inquiries.
Sunshine Coast Detective Inspector Chris Toohey urged anyone with information to contact police.
“This is a tragic circumstances of an elderly male going out for his morning walk,” he said.
“We believe he was out having a walk (when he was allegedly attacked).
Inspector Toohey said the elderly man allegedly had “quite severe” injuries to his face.
Police have set up a crime scene and cordoned off the boardwalk area “just inside” Noosa Woods at the end of Hastings St.
“It’s going to take a fair amount of time for us to go through everything and process what’s going on down there,” Inspector Toohey said.
He said police have also found a bag near the scene which will be part of the investigation.
The 27-year-old man was found about 100m on the Noosa beachfront nearby the crime scene and arrested.
It is believed the two men are not known to each other.
Inspector Toohey confirmed the man was not a Noosa local.
“It’s very early on in the investigation,” he said.
“We are making are some inquiries … and following our leads as to what was happening there.”
Police have launched an investigation into the death.
