Man throws golf balls at woman while travelling 100km/h in terrifying road rage attack
REJECTING the flirtatious advances of a passing motorist ended in terror for this woman when a man hurled golf balls at her while travelling at 100km/h.
AN Ashmore woman is lucky to be alive after a terrifying road-rage attack during which a young man threw golf balls at her car while she was travelling at 100km/h on the M1.
The incident happened about 11am on Saturday at Nerang in front of dozens of shocked motorists.
It is the second time the 25-year-old has been targeted on Gold Coast roads, after another man pointed a shotgun at her in an incident at Arundel last August.
The woman refused to be named for fear of retribution but said she had decided to speak out to warn other women.
“This kind of thing is just happening too often — we should be able to feel safe out and about on the Coast,” she said.
“On Saturday I was driving along the M1 and a guy wound down his window and started waving, blowing kisses and winking. I just ignored him.
“I was driving at 100km/h on the highway and I have a partner — flirting with some guy in a car is the last thing I want to do.”
But the “rejection” wasn’t taken well, with the young male speeding up to stay in line with her and driving erratically to overtake other cars and keep up.
“He started driving like a crazy person, got up close and started pegging golf balls at my car, while yelling at me,” the woman said.
“I accelerated to get away from him.
“The two balls he threw hit my car and I didn’t know how many more he had.
“But next thing I knew he floored it and was gone.
“Luckily I had a dash cam installed in my car after the first road-rage incident.
“I caught the whole thing on camera and have supplied the footage to the police.”
The woman said her car had been damaged but more importantly the man’s actions could have seriously injured or killed her or another motorists.
Southport police are investigating the incident and said they were confident charges would be laid when the man was found.
Officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Ray Vine said the incident could have had serious consequences.
“The victim has made a statement to police and supplied us with dash cam footage which will assist with investigations,” he said.
“Throwing objects from a moving vehicle on the Pacific Motorway is plain dangerous.
“The actions of the young man put many other motorists at risk.
“Police are working to narrow down a suspect and he will be facing charges, including wilful damage and several driving offences.”
The car involved was a blue Ford Falcon with Queensland numberplate 286VUP. The driver is described as being in his late teens with brown hair.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
