Man shot by police in Brisbane’s north after alleged domestic incident

A man shot by police after he allegedly threatened to stab officers during a domestic incident on a suburban street has been named.

The identity of a man shot and critically wounded by police after he allegedly threatened to stab officers during a confrontation on a suburban street in Queensland has been revealed.

Bret James, 45, was rushed to hospital on Monday in a critical condition after officers responding to a domestic violence call shot him three times.

Officers were called to a residence at Burkell Court in Bray Park in Brisbane’s north about 12.30pm on Monday after receiving reports of a domestic incident between a man and a woman.

The situation then escalated, leading to police shooting the 45-year-old.

“It will be alleged police shot the man after he advanced at officers and threatened to stab them,” a Queensland Police statement said.

Mr James was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he was in a critical but stable condition on Monday night.

Detective Superintendent Ben Fadian said earlier the officers had felt threatened at the moment the shots were fired.

“Initial indications are the police felt threatened to the point they had to use force to resolve the situation,” he said.

“And police are trained to use a minimal amount of force necessary to resolve a situation. On this occasion they have used force to try and resolve the situation.”

Police fired “a number of shots” at the man.

Superintendent Fadian would not comment on whether a Taser was deployed before the firearm was discharged.

Residents who also lived at the address and within the street witnessed the incident.

Superintendent Fadian did not confirm whether children living at the address were witnesses.

A nearby resident said she heard shots being fired.

“I heard it, it went at about 12.42 with three quick gunshots ‘bang, bang, bang’ and about 10 minutes later all the police and the ambulances were all in this street,” she told Nine News.

An investigation has been launched into the incident by the Ethical Standards Command with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.

The officers were “experienced”, according to Superintendent Fadian.

Mr James is the fourth person to be shot by Queensland police this year.
