Human remains found in septic tank at Brighton, Queensland

A SEPTIC tank at the back of a Queensland property could have hidden a shocking secret for as long as a decade.

Human remains found in Brisbane’s northeast

THE body of a grown man could have been hidden in a north Brisbane septic tank for as long as a decade.

A maintenance worker inspecting plumbing made the shocking discovery about 11am on Tuesday in the tank at the back of a property used by Autism Queensland on North Rd, Brighton. The disused pit was behind a detached Queenslander-style house being used as an administration building.

Acting Detective Superintendent Mick O’Dowd said initial investigations suggested the person was male, but they didn’t know more than that. He told reporters an investigation would occur at the crime scene this week “until a proper examination can be made of that water tank in the ground”.

“There are some suspicious aspects to the deceased at this stage, and we have to conduct further inquiries in relation to that, bearing in mind the time delay,” he said at the property.

Police couldn’t say exactly how long the remains had been there, but said it could be at least 10 years.

Police are hoping clothing also found in the septic tank will help to identify the badly decomposed man.

Police have been asking people in the area how well they know their neighbours, the Queensland Times reported.

Det Insp O’Dowd said police were calling on anyone with information about missing people either recent or historical in the Brighton area to come forward.

“Any information they have they think might be relevant, please contact Carseldine police or Crimestoppers and we’ll work through that information with them,” he said.
