A 48-YEAR-OLD Queensland man has been charged after a 10-hour siege in Redcliffe, north of Brisbane, yesterday.

The man is alleged to have pointed a gun at police officers and made threats to detonate gas cylinders at the Klingner Rd property.

Two hostages, aged 38 and 88, were held in the property.

The gunman is expected to face Redcliffe Magistrates Court today to face charges of serious assault of police while armed with a weapon, serious assault of police and bomb hoax.

The siege ended without incident about 8pm yesterday.

The man was brought to the middle of the street and handcuffed. There were no casualties.

“A lot of police resources were deployed to end this peacefully and successfully, and the community of Redcliffe have put up with a fair bit of disruption,” Inspector John Hallam said.

Two Energex power company trucks were brought to the Klingner St home to cut power to the house.

At least one Energex crew member was fitted with a bullet proof vest and was being escorted toward the house by heavily armed police.

Insp Hallam said Special Emergency Response Team forces rammed down the gate to the home as part of a range of strategies to make sure the man kept talking to police.

Jackson Sylvester, a 21-year-old who lives on an intersecting street, said he had not been able to drive out of his home to go to work yesterday morning.

“I was leaving for work at 10am and police were on my driveway, they informed me that no one could leave the street because there was a man inside his house who had barricaded himself inside with his family,” Mr Sylvester said yesterday.

One of the hostages, an elderly man, was released in the siege’s fourth hour after negotiations with police entered their fourth hour.

The other adult male, who was released later, was related to the gunman.

Police were threatened by the man when they called on the house about 10.30am. They withdrew to set up an exclusion zone.
