Gold Coast siege

Two men have been charged following an 18-hour siege which forced residents to stay indoors and locked down several streets on the Gold Coast.

A Tugan man, 25, and a Labrador man, 32, have been charged over the standoff, which allegedly began when police attempted to take the men into custody at a residence in the quiet suburb of Nerang on Wednesday.

Some streets were locked down for 18 hours while officers negotiated with the two men inside a duplex.

Both were wanted on return to prison warrants.

One is alleged to have removed his GPS ankle bracelet.

Both men have been charged with possessing dangerous drugs, medicines, a shortened firearm and ammunition, stealing, receiving tainted property, armed robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The 32-year-old was also charged with wilful damage and possessing property suspected of being used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

The pair will face Southport Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Police imposed an emergency declaration about 5pm on Wednesday, which has since been revoked, under the Public Safety Preservation Act.

St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School went into lockdown earlier on Wednesday when the incident began after 3pm, while those who were not in the area when the emergency declaration was put in place were unable to return home.
