A dog has been shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in the early hours of Sunday.

A dog has been shot and killed during a drive-by shooting on the Gold Coast.

A female occupant of the house was taken to hospital with a minor injury to her hand.

The attack happened in the Gold Coast suburb of Mudgeeraba about 5am on Sunday.

The female occupant is assisting police.

Police were called to reports of shots fired into a unit complex on Cobai Drive.

A police spokesperson said the dog could not be saved.

“Upon arrival, a dog was located with life-threatening injuries and was transported by police to a nearby vet surgery,” the spokesperson said.

“Unfortunately, the dog’s injuries were not survivable, and it was humanely euthanised at the veterinary clinic.”

The female home occupant was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with a minor injury to her hand.

“She is currently assisting police with inquiries,” the spokesperson said.

The shooter could face a charge of wilfully kill, maim, or wound animals, the spokesperson said.

Killing a stock animal in Queensland is a crime and carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.

If the animal killed is not a stock animal, the crime is a misdemeanour with a two-year maximum sentence or three years if the offence is committed at night.
