A 14-year-old girl who has been charged with murder only met her alleged victim just hours before she fatally stabbed him at a caravan park on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, police have said.

Emergency services were called to a Big4 Hervey Bay Holiday Park in Point Vernon on Saturday evening following reports a 24-year-old man had been stabbed.

The man was rushed to Hervey Bay Hospital after being treated by paramedics but died a short time later.

Speaking to media on Sunday morning, Detective Acting Inspector Craig Mansfield confirmed the victim suffered a single stab wound to his back.

While police are still working to understand the exact nature of the pair’s relationship, police believe the girl and the man met just a matter of hours leading up to the incident.

Inspector Mansfield said it was possible the pair organised to meet at the park.

He confirmed “some sort of altercation” broke out in an annex area within the caravan park before the man was allegedly fatally stabbed.

A second 14-year-old girl witnessed the incident and is assisting police with inquiries.

Inspector Mansfield said detectives have not yet located the alleged murder weapon.

“We have located items that could be a weapon, but we’re still conducting our investigations at the same,” he said.

Mr Mansfield said there are still “more questions than answers” as investigations continue.

“We’re still conducting inquiries, door knocks and the like out at the scene. The investigation is only really in its infancy,” he said.

“From the early hours of this morning, there’s multiple CCTV data (points) that we need to go through, and obviously, mobile telephones and the like to establish exactly that.”

Inspector Mansfield said there were a number of people “awake and walking around the caravan park” at the time of the alleged murder.

He confirmed police are yet to obtain a version of events from the alleged attacker, who has sough support from her parents following the incident.

Police are still working to establish where the victim lived, but early information suggests his living situation was “slightly transient”.

At the time of the alleged murder, police believe the man was living out of his vehicle which was parked at the scene.

The 14-year-old girl was taken into custody nearby and was later charged with one count of murder.

She will appear before Hervey Bay Childrens Court on Monday morning.

Anyone with information that could help police with investigations into the alleged murder is urged to come forward.
