CCTV footage of getaway cars in Finks bikie Shane Bowden murder released
New footage has been released as cops hunt the people responsible for a brutal hit on a notorious bikie on the Gold Coast.
Police have released CCTV footage of two vehicles used as getaway cars after the brutal murder of notorious bikie Shane Bowden on the Gold Coast last year.
The cars were purchased in the Ipswich and Redlands area about a week before the hit in Pimpama on October 12, when Bowden was shot 21 times by two gunmen.
Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith told media on Sunday that the silver Holden Commodore and maroon Ford Falcon were bought by associates of the Mongols outlaw motorcycle club.
“We’re not saying that these people are gang members but they’re clearly associates of that gang and operating under their direction and control,” he said.
Both cars were found burnt out on the day of the shooting.
Superintendent Smith has called for anyone who saw the vehicles being driven around prior to the “vicious” shooting to come forward.
Any information that could identify the drivers would be especially valued, he said.
“It’s interesting to note that (in) one of the vehicles the driver is clearly wearing gloves, which is an attempt to hide his identity through fingerprints and such,” he said.
Bowden, 48, was a former Mongol who was forced out of the gang and patched over to rivals the Finks.
Superintendent Smith said police believed two gunmen carried out the hit but there was a “large group” of people who planned and facilitated the murder.
The motive for the shooting is linked to Bowden’s fallout with the Mongols, he said.
“Whether that’s because he left the club or whether he’s done something in the interim to cause bad blood,” he said.
“We all know that these gangs, there’s no honour among thieves as they say. He is a victim of a vicious, callous and premeditated murder.
“He’s been shot 21 times, I mean that’s quite significant. It’s unusual. I can think of one in recent years where there’s been so much … anger to kill one of these members.”
Bowden survived a shooting in Melbourne shortly after being released from prison in June last year and fled back to Queensland, breaching border controls enforced due to lockdown measures.
The border crossing created headlines when it was revealed Bowden lied on his permit and had tested positive for Covid-19.
On Friday, a $250,000 reward was announced for information leading to the conviction of anyone responsible for the murder.
Indemnity will also be recommended for anyone who is an accomplice of the hit but who did not carry out the murder, if they provide information to the police.
