Queensland’s top cop insists police were forced to shoot an armed man during an “incredibly tense” six-hour siege in Brisbane on Monday.

Peter Pilkington was revealed as the gunman killed by officers after he allegedly shot at police, with friends mourning the man’s death on Facebook.

A lengthy poem posted on social media described the “wave of sadness” on the news of Mr Pilkington’s death “as I think about the person you could have been”.

“You could not become the hero of your story,” the post continued.

“I hope somehow now, you find some peace.”

Police rushed to Compton Rd at Stretton about 1.20pm Monday after reports of a disturbance at a business, but it wasn’t until about 3pm the man allegedly pulled out a gun.

The 48-year-old Woodbridge man allegedly held five members of the public inside in a separate room to him.

Heavily armed specialist police attended the scene as surrounding businesses were evacuated and an exclusion zone was established on the street.

Ambulance and police cars filled the street and the back of the business while Polair patrolled the scene overhead.

After hours of negotiations, police allege the man raised his weapon at officers about 7.30pm and was shot.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll described the siege as a “very difficult situation”, with negotiators, specialist police and general duty officers attending the scene.

“Some members of that business could not get out and were in an adjoining room to where the gunman was,” she told reporters on Tuesday morning.

“We will allege that that person has tried to fire at one of our officers and, as a result, action was taken by police.

“That person was taken to hospital in a critical condition and has passed away.”

The shooting is being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command with the assistance of the Crime and Corruption Commission.
