A man could be in prison for two years after being charged with impersonating an Australian Federal Police officer in Brisbane earlier this year.

The man allegedly posed as an AFP officer on February 17 when pulling over a motorist on the Gateway Motorway in Tingalpa.

Using a fake police badge, he allegedly told the driver he would face court action.

The motorist subsequently reported the incident to the AFP, who began an investigation.

Two months later on May 18, officers attended a 41-year-old Brisbane man’s address in Tingalpa and charged him with one count of impersonating a Commonwealth Public Official.

AFP Acting Commander Helen Schneider said the man’s alleged crime was a serious offence.

“Impersonating commonwealth officials and the potential misuse of fake police identification is something we take very seriously, which is reflected in our investigation of the alleged incident,” she said.

“Falsely representing yourself as any kind of law enforcement or commonwealth official is a genuine danger to public safety. Incidents like this will be investigated by police, and people convicted of these offences could face time in prison.”

The man was due to appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.

If found guilty, the maximum penalty is two years’ imprisonment.
