Boy, 5, seriously injured after rock thrown through train window in Cairns North

A five-year-old boy has been seriously injured after a rock was thrown at his head in a bizarre train incident, with detectives now investigating.

A five-year-old-boy has been left with serious head injuries after a rock struck him while riding on a train in Far North Queensland.

Detectives on Sunday issued a public appeal for witnesses or anyone with vision in the Cairns North area to come forward.

Queensland Police said its believed a rock was thrown through the train window about 4pm on Saturday near the James St and Law St intersection.

“Initial investigations indicate just after 4pm, a rock was thrown through a train window … striking a 5-year-old boy in the head,” a spokesman said.

The boy suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Cairns Hospital but is expected to be transported to Townsville Hospital on Sunday for further treatment.
