Arrested man hijacks Queensland police car and crashes it
AN ARRESTED man managed to hijack a police car and crash it. He managed to escape the car through the back window and jump in the driver’s seat.
A MAN who had been arrested managed to hijack a police car and crash it.
Police caught up with the man earlier today and arrested him over an alleged break and enter in Bellmere, in Queensland’s Moreton Bay region.
Police said they went to a house about 7.15am Tuesday morning after they had reports of a home invasion and when police pulled up to the home, the man was seen driving away in a vehicle. He then ditched the car and ran away.
A short time later police caught the man and put him in the back of the police car.
Queensland Police said in a statement while authorities were talking with neighbours about the incident, the man somehow opened the back window of the police car, climbed out of it and jumped in the driver’s seat. Police ran back to the car and got in the passenger side while the man began to drive.
Police struggled with the man and the car swerved across the road and hit parking bollards.
The statement said authorities calmed the man down, but two of the officers on the scene suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.
Investigations into the incident revealed officers had a proximity key, meaning the man could start the car without having it in the ignition.
Investigations into the incident are continuing and the man is assisting police with their inquiries.
