‘Rot in hell’: Emotional scenes unfold as retired doctor Thomas Lang jailed for murdering Qld woman Maureen Boyce
An emotional supporter of convicted murderer Thomas Chris Lang told a detective to “rot in hell” after the retired US doctor was again jailed for life.
Emotional supporters of convicted murderer Thomas Chris Lang lashed out at police on Monday as the retired American doctor was again jailed for life over the murder of Queensland woman Maureen Boyce.
Thomas Chris Lang protested as the jury handed down a guilty verdict at his retrial in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday afternoon.
He declared he “didn’t do it” when asked if he had anything to say following the verdict as he sat in the dock.
One of his upset supporters told a detective to “rot in hell” as she exited the court complex.
Lang, 68, had pleaded not guilty to stabbing Ms Boyce, a Brisbane socialite, to death in her Kangaroo Point unit in October 2015.
Ms Boyce, a former model, was found in her bed with a 19cm kitchen knife protruding from her abdomen.
Lang was previously jailed for life for her murder in 2017.
But earlier this year the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction and ordered a retrial.
The Crown argued Lang, who was Ms Boyce’s lover at the time, murdered her, but defence barrister Ruth O’Gorman contended Ms Boyce’s death was a suicide.
She argued DNA belonging only to Ms Boyce was found on the blade and there was no medical evidence she struggled.
The court heard Ms Boyce had struggled with mental health issues, but ultimately the jury rejected the assertion she killed herself.
Crown prosecutor Todd Fuller said Lang had been “driven to the edge” after reading messages revealing Ms Boyce had been communicating with another man.
The pair met in America 30 years ago but rekindled their relationship in 2013, the court heard.
The jury was told by a forensic pathologist the knife blade had been found with separate “track marks” that indicated it had been withdrawn and reinserted.
During the trial, the harrowing triple 0 call made on the morning Ms Boyce was found dead was played to the court.
Following Monday’s verdict, Justice Ann Lyons sentenced Lang to life imprisonment for the second time.
She said the full circumstances of the murder could not be known as he lied about critical events and in his interviews with police.
“You gave elaborate and evolving explanations,” Justice Lyons said.
“The circumstances surrounding her (Ms Boyce’s) death is clearly a cause of great and continuing distress to her family.
“They have been deprived of her love … it’s a cause of great sadness she did not get to meet her grandchildren.”
Outside of court, an emotional supporter of Lang revealed her shock at the verdict.
“I really held out some hope that this time would be different,” she told waiting media.
“I was getting his room ready in our apartment and now we’ve got to start visiting him in jail all over again.”
