Man, 45, charged with assault, domestic violence offences following police shooting in Toowoomba, Qld

A man who was shot by police after allegedly approaching them with a knife has been hit with serious criminal charges.

The man who was shot by police has fronted court as prosecutors reveal what allegedly happened in the moments before the shooting.

The man, 45, fronted Toowoomba Magistrates Court today charged with four counts of serious assault of a police officer while armed with a weapon, two counts of contravention of a domestic violence offence and one count each of wounding in a domestic violence offence, common assault and assault occasioning bodily harm while armed in domestic violence offence.

Queensland Police shot the man outside a North Toowoomba address on Ruthven St on Monday about 5pm.

In a statement released on Friday afternoon, the police said they attended the address “in relation to a man wanted for questioning”.

“It is alleged that upon arrival a man armed with a knife came at police,” the police said.

“As a result, he was shot in the chest and transported to Toowoomba Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“The man is currently in a stable condition and is receiving treatment at Toowoomba Hospital.”

Legal representatives appeared in court on Friday on behalf the man, the police said.

Two officers received minor injuries in this incident and have been released from hospital.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating and the investigation will be subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission, the police added.

Toowoomba is about 130km west of Brisbane.
