The man accused of murdering his girlfriend’s father following a violent confrontation at a North Ipswich Christmas gathering has been named.
The man alleged to have stabbed his girlfriend’s father to death following a family Christmas gathering has been identified.
Garth Michael Reid is accused of murdering Warren Toby, 53, in North Ipswich after an argument between the pair allegedly spilt into the street late Christmas evening.
The violent confrontation is alleged to have left Mr Toby with significant stab wounds, with shocked neighbours describing the horrified screams as the Queensland father lay dying in his front yard.
Mr Reid, 33, did not appear at Ipswich Magistrates Court when his matter was briefly mentioned on Monday.
His defence lawyer, Kevin Rose, asked for a committal mention date on February 3.
No application for bail was made.
Mr Reid has been charged with murder, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and wilful damage following the alleged violent confrontation on December 25.
Police allege Mr Reid, who is understood to be in a relationship with Mr Toby’s 30-year-old daughter, used a sharp “implement” to deliver the stab wounds to Mr Toby.
Mr Toby died from his injuries despite attempts to revive him.
Detective Inspector Heath McQueen said on Saturday several people had attended the residence that day and alcohol was consumed before the fatal fight erupted.
Mr Reid was arrested at his Woodgate home at 5am the following day.
“Preliminary investigations have identified there were a number of persons present at that address yesterday known to each other, either related or in de facto relationships,” Inspector McQueen told the media.
“As the evening has gone on there has been a disturbance within the dwelling.
“As a result of that disturbance inside the dwelling it has moved into the front yard.”
Shocked neighbours described the moment Mr Toby’s desperate son yelled for help just minutes before he died.
“I could hear the son yelling out ‘my dad’s dying in my arms’,” neighbour Shane Muhling said.
