GARRY Dubois has been found guilty of killing Barbara McCulkin and her two daughters, who disappeared from Brisbane in 1974.

The 69-year-old was convicted by a Brisbane Supreme Court jury on Monday after they deliberated for more than 10 hours over Mrs McCulkin’s manslaughter and the murder of siblings Vicki, 13, and Leanne McCulkin, 11.

Dubois was also found guilty of raping the two girls and guilty of deprivation of liberty. Dubois had been accused of allegedly helping another man, Vincent O’Dempsey, by either restraining the family members or by encouraging him.

Dempsey will face his own trial in May next year. Dubois will not be sentenced until after that trial.

The jury heard almost two weeks of evidence from more than 40 witnesses, and listened to more than three days of closing addresses from the prosecution, defence and Justice Peter Applegarth.

Members of Mrs McCulkin’s family sobbed as the verdict was handed down, while Dubois’ wife Jan shook her head, reported The Courier Mail.

Detective Inspector Mick Dowie, speaking on behalf of the McCulkin family and investigation team outside court, said they welcomed the jury’s verdict.

The trio vanished from their home in the inner-Brisbane suburb of Highgate Hill on January 16, 1974. The three-week trial heard they were taken from their home to bushland and killed.

More to come.
