Brisbane protesters call for justice after death of Aubrey Donahue

A courthouse was briefly locked down after hundreds of people protested outside following the shooting death of an Aboriginal man.

The Brisbane Supreme and District Courts building was placed briefly into lockdown after hundreds of people protested outside following the death of Aubrey Donahue in Far North Queensland.

About 200 people marched from King George Square to the courthouse through the streets of the CBD, chanting “justice for Aubrey”.

Mr Donahue, 27, was shot by police in Mareeba on Saturday.

His death has sparked protests across the state as supporters call for justice.

Police officers were visible on motorbikes and bicycles and in marked and unmarked cars during Friday’s protest in Brisbane.

Officers were stationed outside the Brisbane Magistrates Court as a precaution, with courthouse security also on alert.

But protesters made their way towards the opposite lawn near the Supreme and District Courts building on George St, where they gathered to share stories about their dealings with police.

The Supreme and District Courts building was placed into lockdown about 11am and lifted a few minutes later.

The protesters walked up to the doors of the building but did not go in.

Protesters remained on the lawn for a few hours, listening to stories from Indigenous rights advocates.
