Is Tanya Plibersek set to replace Anthony Albanese?

Sportsbet is taking bets on whether Labor leader Anthony Albanese will still be in the job at the next election predicting Tanya Plibersek will replace him.

Just weeks after surviving a horror car smash, betting agencies have sought to capitalise on the speculation in Labor ranks over Mr Albanese’s performance.

“Anthony Albanese won’t be Labor leader at the next federal election,’’ Sportsbet predicts.

But it’s hardly a confident prediction, with Mr Albanese’s shot at being the Labor leader at the next election paying $1.85, while seeing out his term is priced at $1.90.

Tanya Plibersek is the most likely contender to take the party reins according to Sportsbet at $1.95. Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers is second favourite ($3.25), whilst rebel MP Joel Fitzgibbon who quit the frontbench is longshot odds at $18,’’ Sportsbet said.

“Australians love leadership spills, and we haven’t had one in a while. Twitter hashtags aside, it might be time for Albo to start doing the numbers” said Sportsbet.com.au’s Rich Hummerston.

Nearly two years ago, Ms Plibersek considered a run for the top job but mysteriously bowed out just 24 hours later citing family responsibilities.

“Now is not my time,’’ she said.

“I know some people will be disappointed with this decision.

“I will serve in whatever capacity my colleagues best think can help Labor return to government.”

Labor leader Anthony Albanese has confirmed he’s still recovering from a horror car crash in Marrickville recently.

Mr Albanese has confirmed he has no plans to travel to Canberra until the weekend.

“Mate, at the moment I am not heading too far from Marrickville. I am having a medical assessment tomorrow of whether I can go to Canberra in a few days’ time to do a bit of quarantining there in the lead-up to the Parliament sitting the week after next, which would then enable me to travel more broadly from Canberra,’’ he said.

Mr Albanese has remained in his inner west electorate since a horror car accident just under a fortnight ago when a P-plater in a Range Rover smashed into his vehicle leaving him with internal injuries and swelling.

“I’m recovering slowly but I’m getting there,’’ Mr Albanese told 4BC on Tuesday when asked how he was going.

“Yes, the accident. Let’s start with the car accident,’’ radio host Neil Breen replied.

“Well, I got my car totalled in a head-on with a Range Rover. But I’m recovering.

For most MPs there are now few restrictions to travel to and from Canberra unless you have visited certain areas in Sydney, including the suburb where Mr Albanese lives.

If they want to be able to walk the streets or eat in a restaurant they need to quarantine.

“Anyone who resides in or has been in these Local Government Areas will have to comply with ACT Health requirements in order to travel to the ACT and attend Parliament House for the sitting week commencing Tuesday 2 February. Entry into the ACT from all other areas in Australia, at this stage, is unrestricted,’’ the advice states.

“Members who reside in or have been in any of the LGAs are requested to follow the attached Emergency Directions which provide guidance for entry to the ACT for essential parliamentary business and agree to abide by the core principles outline within. Members will only be able to attend Parliament House and travel to and from their place of accommodation. They will not be able to travel to other places in the ACT. Affected Members who wish to travel more widely in the ACT will need to quarantine for 14 days. Please follow the advice and application process in the Directions.”

Those exemptions only provide for MPs, not staff who are required to abide by the public health order.
