Scott Morrison was caught off guard by an unexpected tongue twister on the campaign trail on Sunday, leading to awkward laughs from the Prime Minister and his colleagues.

Speaking to reporters in Adelaide, Mr Morrison was spruiking the funding of Adelaide's North-South corridor when he tripped over his words.

“This brings to completion the full financial commitment of the Commonwealth government to this sh*tty, city, ship, city shaping – gotta be careful with,” he said awkwardly.

He laughed off his blunder: “Sure that’ll get a run.”

The awkward gaffe comes just days after the Prime Minister was roasted online after the release of a clip from his upcoming 60 Minutes interview had him showing off his ukulele skills.

“OK, did not expect to see Scott Morrison busting out a ukulele on 60 minutes and singing April Sun in Cuba,” wrote one Twitter user.

“Quite staggering that not one of Scott Morrison‘s media advisers asked ‘What’s the first place that people associate the ukulele with?’ before going ahead with that scene,” sports journalist Alexander Grant said.

The extended behind the scenes interview, which is set to air on Nine on Sunday evening, is an attempt to soften the Prime Minister’s image as faces the prospect of a political wipe-out.

In the first Newspoll of the year, Labor recorded the biggest lead since the ousting of Malcolm Turnbull in 2019.

The interview is also set to mark a ramped up presence of the Prime Minister’s wife Jenny ahead of an expected May election.

Sources within the government have previously dubbed Ms Morrison as her husband’s “secret weapon” and lamented at her reluctance to do participate in media events.

In another clip released prior to the episode, Ms Morrison said she felt “sick to her stomach” after the Prime Minister was confronted with leaked text messages that labelled him a “horrible person” and a “complete psycho”.

“I felt sick to my stomach because they were talking about someone that I really care about. And I just thought it was such a poor question with such bad intent, that those people just have no idea how it would affect my family” she said.
