More has been revealed about the romantic evening shared by Australia’s first couple before the proposal.

‘She said yes’: Anthony Albanese is engaged

The juicy details of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s proposal to his longtime girlfriend Jodie Haydon on Valentine’s Day have been revealed.

He took to X - formerly known as Twitter - to announce the news on Thursday morning, with a photo of the happy couple grinning from ear to ear with the caption: “She said yes”.

It can now be revealed the couple were celebrating Valentine’s Day at Canberra restaurant Italian and Sons on Wednesday evening before they returned to The Lodge where the prime minister popped the question.

It is also understood the PM specially designed the ring for Jodie.

“We are thrilled and excited to share this news and look forward to spending the rest of our lives together. We are so lucky to have found each other,” the couple said in a joint statement on Thursday.

Within minutes, the post received 4500 likes and almost 1000 comments congratulating the couple on their happy news.

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, ABC TV host Fran Kelly as well as multiple Labor politicians all sent their best wishes to the couple.

Foreign Affairs minister Penny Wong reacted to the news saying, “Love is a beautiful thing. I’m so happy for you both!”

Labor politician Peter Khalil said the prime minister “really outdid us all on Valentine’s Day”, adding that his now fiance is a “lovely person” and they are “both very lucky to have each other”.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton said he ran into the prime minister in Parliament this morning and offered his congratulations.

“Of course, I just saw the PM in the chamber and shook his hand and said congratulations,” he told 2GB host Ray Hadley.

“Jodie’s a lovely person and I wish them every happiness.

“They obviously have a special relationship they have and I wish them every success.”

It came after Hadley said his “listeners, like me, can be a little cynical” and were suspicious about the timing of the announcement.

Ms Haydon, 45, opened up about the couple’s love-story in an exclusive interview with News Corp in April 2022.

“I slid into his DMs,’’ she confessed.

“He had a public profile and I didn’t, so I knew that we both followed the same footy team, we both had a love for the inner west and I think I said in that direct message ‘hey, we’re both single.”

The prime minister’s story was a little different, telling Women’s Weekly magazine that he was speaking at a Melbourne event in March 2020 when he spotted her in the crowd.

He said he asked if there were any South Sydney fans in the audience, to which “Jodie yelled out, ‘Up the Rabbitohs’”.

Mr Albanese introduced himself after leaving the stage and quickly worked out the pair have a lot more in common, including that she lived just a couple of suburbs away in his electorate of Marrickville.

The couple have been dating for almost four years and have deflected questions about their potential nuptials since going public with the relationship just before he announced he would be running for prime minister.

Albanese, 60, is the nation’s first prime minister to have been through a divorce, sharing a 30-year marriage to Carmel Tebbutt from 2000 until 2019.

The former couple share one child together, their son Nathan.

He is also the first Australian leader to get engaged while in office and potentially the first to get married while in office, provided he survives the next election scheduled for before 2025.
