Husband of independent MP Monique Ryan filmed pulling down Libs poster

The husband of a federal Teal politician has been filmed pulling down a rival candidate’s poster and the furore is trending on social media.

Footage of federal independent MP Monique Ryan’s husband pulling down a Liberal candidate’s poster has gone viral.

Across Monday, the clip showing Dr Ryan’s husband Peter Jordan carrying away a poster advertising Liberal Kooyong candidate Amelia Hamer trended across social media giant X, with right-leaning commentators jumping on the act to take a swipe at the Teals, a loose collection of parliamentarians who ran on climate-change issues in the 2022 federal election.

Former Liberal and Libertarian NSW senate candidate Craig Kelly said the video reflected something larger about the Teals.

“Teals caught red-handed,” he posted.

“This video tells you everything you need to know about the Teals.

“They are so full of themselves and they believe they so morally superior that they are entitled to thieve other people’s property in broad-daylight.”

Another user said the footage exposed a “left inner-city elite”.

Dr Ryan is the member for Kooyong in inner Melbourne and Ms Hamer is vying to replace her and return the leafy electorate to Liberal hands.

The footage begins as Mr Jordan is already walking away with the placard.

A Liberal Party supporter pursues Mr Jordan along a footpath while Mr Jordan carries the large sign away.

Mr Jordan claims the sign had been illegally placed on public land.

“I’m taking the sign down … it’s on public land … I’m not saying who I am,” Mr Jordan says in the video.

He also refused to identify himself.

“I’m not acting on behalf of anyone, mate,” Mr Jordan said as the pair bickered.

“If you put up illegal signs they will be taken down.”

Responding to the kerfuffle, the Australian Electoral Commission said it did not regulate the placement of political signage.

“The AEC doesn’t regulate the placement of signage or disagreements over signage placement,” the AEC said.

“Signage on public land is generally a matter for local council.

“While we don’t regulate sign placement, we’re reminding all campaigners of the importance of campaigning respectfully.”

The clip was uploaded to social media on Monday morning.

In a statement, Mr Jordan said he was sorry.

“I unreservedly apologise for removing the sign. It was a mistake,” he said.

“I believed the sign was illegally placed, but I should have reported my concerns to council.”

Dr Ryan also apologised for the incident in the same statement.

“I apologise for the removal of the sign. It should not have happened,” she said.

“All concerns around signage should be reported to council.”
