Coronavirus: States continue to slug it out over border move

Queensland’s border checkpoint won’t be moving south according to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, who says the issue is one for her state counterpart to deal with.

Border wars, QLD vs NSW

The stoush over Queensland’s shared border with NSW continues, with both premiers seemingly unwilling to reach an agreement on the possible relocation of the checkpoint to enter the Sunshine State.

On the day Queensland reported one new coronavirus case, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said if Queensland was having trouble with its checkpoint, it would be up to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to move it further north.

“Given the rate of lack of community transmission in northern NSW, we see absolutely no reason whatsoever why it should move south,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We have no intention of changing the existing checkpoint.”

Ms Palaszczuk asked for Queensland’s checkpoint to move further south into NSW in an effort to make it easier for commuters in the Tweed region.

“She’s not at all inclined to move the border – I’ve tried,” Ms Palaszczuk said

“But I do have concerns when the NSW Premier says the state is on heightened alert, which means that I’m on a heightened alert.”

Queensland’s new coronavirus case brings the total confirmed cases in the state to 1073. NSW reported 16 new cases on Wednesday, bringing its total confirmed cases to 3425.
