Emergency services have rushed to a Sydney Bunnings store after a woman suffered respiratory problems caused by a chemical spill.
The incident took place at the Balgowlah store in the northern part of the city on Thursday evening, prompting the immediate response of firefighters and a hazardous materials team.
Emergency services were alerted to a leak from a truck transporting chemicals and firefighters and the hazardous materials crew arrived around 6pm.
The spill has been successfully contained, but the next step involves unloading a semi-trailer loaded with various chemicals such as acids, chlorine, and aerosols. Only after unloading the pallets of chemicals can the area be properly cleaned.
Superintendent Adam Dewberry from NSW Fire and Rescue stated that the hazardous chemicals were found to be leaking from the rear of the truck.
To assess the extent of the leak, a hazmat team, accompanied by eight fire trucks, is currently on-site and actively unloading the truck. Their primary objective is to locate the leaking drum and ensure its safe containment.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the spilt substance is sodium hydrochloride, commonly known as chlorine, typically used for swimming pools.
Furthermore, Superintendent Dewberry confirmed that a woman at the scene received medical attention for breathing difficulties and has since been transported to the hospital for further treatment.
