Two sisters from southwest Sydney have been hailed as “legends” for successfully earning enough money through recycling for a relaxing cruise holiday.

In a now viral Reddit post, the user shared how she (63) and her sister (58), achieved their goal of saving for a holiday through the New South Wales recycling initiative ‘Return and Earn’- a scheme through which punters can earn money by simply recycling goods at designated stations.

“A financial goal achieved. I collected recyclables to save money to go on a cruise with my sister. Our first ever at 63 and 58. A little bit here and there also went to charity,” the user said.

The user provided proof of their hard work through a screenshot of the transactions from various return and earn stations in Sydney’s southwest.

The 63-year-old detailed the many benefits she claims she got from her strict recycling routine of walking three to four hours a day, four times a week, since starting in January 2022.

“The joy of walking three to four hours a day, four times a week, collecting recyclables has been priceless. At 63, I don’t need medication to keep blood pressure, cholesterol and weight under control. Recycling has given me more than pocket money,” she said.

When asked how she managed to collect that many recyclable goods she said she scavenged around various suburbs in her area during garbage collection days and always asked for permission from house owners to go through their bins.

“Since I only walk a certain route I remember which homeowners don’t like it. I respect their decision. I do it during the day when they get to see me. Others go through bins in the middle of the night or before daybreak. I think that’s too disrespectful to homeowners,” she said.

The user added that she tried to minimise the noise created from searching for goods including cans and glasses, as she assumes there would be parents who have young kids that are sleeping.

“Best of all, I’ve gotten to know so many people by sight. Some by name. They put their recyclables in a bag for me. People, in general, are kind.”

The post has generated an extremely positive reaction from the internet with many applauding the user and her sister for their hard work and determination.

One user said: “A great example of a little goes a long way.”

Another congratulated the duo for their achievement and said: “Impressive! Well done you and I hope you both have a great trip!”
