IT’S the news commuters have been waiting for.
The State Transit Authority has installed free Wi-Fi on 50 buses across the city as part of a new trial.
The buses branded with pink signage for the CATCH internet access will be split up across the four Sydney bus depots including Leichardt, Waverly, Northern Beaches and Ryde.
The Wi-Fi buses are not isolated to one route, instead will rotate daily so every area of Sydney can have a test run.
If the trial is successful, up to 1000 buses across Sydney could be fitted with Wi-Fi by the end of the year.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance welcomed the trial.
“So many people rely on being connected to their smartphone, often using the time of their commute to catch up on news, emails and social media — so it is pleasing to see these types of trials underway,” Mr Constance said.
“We are always looking for ways to improve the customer experience across all public transport services, particularly when it comes to providing reliability and convenience.
“This trial will help us understand how reliable the technology is and how our customers would use it.
“I am looking forward to seeing the results of the trial and the feedback from customers.”
Commuters will have to download the ‘CATCH’ app to their smart phone to be able to access the internet.
The buses will also be installed with screens broadcasting Sky News for the very first time.
