NSW Premier flags changes to corruption watchdog that brought down predecessor
The NSW Premier has flagged changes to the corruption watchdog that brought down his predecessor earlier this year.
The corruption watchdog that brought down former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian could be due for a review, says the man who took over the job, current Premier Dominic Perrottet.
Speaking to 2GB, Mr Perrottet promised to review the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) over the course of 2022.
“If things need to be looked at, I will certainly look at it over the course of the next 12 months,” Mr Perrottet said.
“I think from time to time all areas of government need to be reviewed and look at where things can be improved and the ICAC is no different.”
Overall he said the organisation had done a “superb job” and continued to play an important role preventing corruption in NSW.
He acknowledged there was an argument for keeping hearings private until guilt is established to avoid impact on those called to give evidence.
“People are going to have different opinions on how those hearing are conducted and I respect those views,” he said.
Mr Perrottet listed disgraced former NSW Labor ministers Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald, who were found guilty of corruption, as examples of the positive impact ICAC has had.
