Alex Turnbull, son of the former Prime Minister, encourages Aussies not to vote for the Liberals
MALCOLM Turnbull’s son is taking down his dad’s former party, explaining to voters why they shouldn’t vote for the Liberals at Wentworth.
WHEN thousands of Sydneysiders go the polls next week to vote in the Wentworth by-election, Malcolm Turnbull’s son Alex is encouraging them to show their support for anyone but the Liberals.
In a damning social media video last night, Mr Turnbull said the government’s “insane” lack of response to climate change meant voters should not vote for the Liberals in Wentworth.
“We’re going to have an election within 12 months anyway, so if you want to send a signal as to which way the Liberal Party is going, and your displeasure with where it’s going, then this is your opportunity,” Mr Turnbull said.
“Don’t vote for the Liberal Party in the Wentworth by-election. If you want to pull the Liberal Party back from the brink it’s the one clear signal you can send.”
Liberal Dave Sharma is contesting the seat against independent Kerryn Phelps and Labor’s Tim Murray.
Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull resigned from his seat in August after a week-long attempt to change the leader of Australia.
His resignation triggered the Wentworth by-election, which if the Liberals lose, means the Coalition would lose its one-seat majority.
While the former PM was staying silent on the election for his old seat, his son’s video has dragged him into the spotlight.
“I disagree with Alex. His father disagrees with him too,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told the ABC earlier today.
“His father Malcolm Turnbull is heavily supporting Dave Sharma, the only Liberal candidate running for Wentworth.”
Mr Morrison said the former prime minister has recently been silent on the issue as he has bowed out of public life.
Speaking on Sky News, reporter Sharri Markson said despite Mr Morrison claiming the former PM was with the Liberals, it was obvious Alex Turnbull was helping out his dad.
“Quite an intervention by the former Prime Minister’s son. Make no mistake about it, (Malcolm) Turnbull does not want Scott Morrison to win this by-election. He wants Scott Morrison to lose it.
“He’s been behind the scenes trying to encourage the new Prime Minister to go straight to an election. He doesn’t want to give him the breathing space to get ahead of the polls, to get momentum, to announce positive policies.
“But Turnbull himself can’t come out and say anything, he can’t go about and say voters should back the Labor Party or the independent because he would be accused of gross disloyalty so instead he’s had his son do it for him, what else are kids for?”
Malcolm Turnbull doesn't want the Liberals to win this by-election. He doesn't want Scott Morrison to win. But he can't come out and say anything since he would be accused of gross disloyalty. Instead, his son has done it for him.
