NSW records 49 Covid-19 deaths in deadliest day for the state

NSW has had its deadliest day of the pandemic along with another 13,354 cases of Covid.

The number of people requiring hospitalisation and intensive care in NSW is beginning to plateau, as the state marked its deadliest day of the pandemic on Saturday.

There were 13,354 new infections, with 7928 cases recorded from PCR tests and 5426 from rapid antigen tests.

There were also a record 49 deaths which was made up of two people in their 60s, 10 people in their 70s, 17 people in their 80s, 19 people in their 90s, and one person who was 100 years old.

NSW Health said only 11 of the 49 people who died had received three doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Hospitalisations across the state have dropped slightly from Friday.

There are currently 2693 people with the virus being treated in hospital, of which 186 are in ICU.

Just under 38 per cent of the state’s population have now received their booster shot and 35 per cent of 5 to 11 year olds have received one dose of the vaccine.

It comes as new modelling suggests next week could be the circuit breaker hospitals are hoping for, with admissions set to drop across the state.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the trends in the latest modelling were “positive”.

On Friday, NSW Health deputy secretary Susan Pearce said the decline was coming.

“They might not follow a lovely curve, and it may be a bit lumpy but we do expect that in the coming week we will start to see some declines,” she said.
