POLICE were waiting for a Sydney man at a busy shopping centre as he got out of a taxi with a sub-machine gun in his bag.

Specialist police from the Firearms Squad and Tactical Operations Unit joined local officers making the arrest yesterday. The operation unfolded in front of startled shoppers about noon yesterday.

When police searched 41-year-old Marc Avidov’s bag they allegedly found a fully automatic sub-machine gun, a clip and 15 shotgun shells.

He did not apply for bail when he fronted Newtown Local Court on Thursday, charged with firearm offences, including possessing an unregistered firearm, and has been remanded in custody.

Avidov will return to court next week.
