Nine-year-old’s horror injuries after being run over by a dirt bike in Sydney park

The Year 4 student was left with significant head and facial injuries and needs a cosmetic surgeon after an hours-long emergency surgery on Thursday night.

A nine-year-old girl has undergone hours of emergency surgery after being run over by a dirt bike while playing in a park in Sydney’s south west.

Year 4 student Elizabeth Bambina was rolling down the grass in the park behind her Rosemeadow home when she was struck by the trail bike just before 6pm on Thursday, causing significant head and facial injuries.

“I just dropped everything and legged it out the back. She wasn’t moving, she wasn’t breathing,” the girl’s aunt told 9News.

“What if she was by herself? She could have been dead.”

Family and friends attempted to stop the bleeding as they waited for paramedics to arrive and take Elizabeth to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead where she received emergency surgery overnight.

Elizabeth was back in surgery on Friday morning and will also be seen by plastic surgeons.

She was supposed to be going to Disney on Ice tonight her aunt said, instead, she’s facing a long recovery and life-changing injuries.
The girl’s mother, who was interstate at the time of the incident, is travelling home.

“The circumstances in which this unfolded is a traumatic event for everyone involved and particularly the patient,” Abbey Gillam from NSW Ambulance said.

Police are now calling for assistance in tracking down the rider of the bike who was wearing a white helmet.

“The rider would know that he hit the little girl,” Detective Superintendent Grant Healey said, “He did stop briefly, had a really brief conversation and rode off without helping the young child.”
