A woman from Sydney has died after being pulled from treacherous surf at Park Beach, Coffs Harbour on Monday.

Several beaches in the area were closed at the time due to the dangerous conditions, created by ex-tropical cyclone Seth.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was pulled unconscious from the water by members of the public shortly before 1pm.

Despite attempts by both witnesses and paramedics to revive her, she died at the scene.

Police said the woman had been on holiday from Sydney, but were waiting to inform family before releasing the woman’s identity.

“Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth, currently located about 400km to the east of the far north coast of New South Wales, is bringing large and powerful waves, hazardous surf conditions and strong to gale force winds over northern coastal waters today,” a warning from the Bureau of Meteorology stated.

Already this year, five people have died in drowning incidents on Australia’s coast.

Since the beginning of December, there have been 19 coastal drownings, representing a 19 per cent spike above last year.

“Summer and holidays are great times to be on our coastline with family and friends and we want everyone to enjoy this time and return home safely,” Surf Life Saving Australia chief executive Adam Weir said.

“For this reason, we are urging all who visit our coastline to undertake some simple measures, such as swimming at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags.”
