Woman dies after being hit by a train at Punchbowl train station

A woman has died after she was hit by a train in Sydney.

Emergency services were called to Punchbowl train station about 3.30pm on Tuesday after a woman, 52, was struck by a citybound train.

The woman had reportedly climbed onto the tracks after she dropped something but was unable to get back onto the platform.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked to free the woman from beneath the train, and it’s understood a large team of paramedics, including intensive care, critical care and rescue paramedics, treated the woman.

She was transferred to an ambulance where crews worked to stabilise her before she was taken to St George Hospital about 4.45pm.

On Wednesday morning, police said the woman had died.

The train driver has returned a negative breath test and police have spoken with witnesses and viewed CCTV footage as part of inquiries.

Police closed The Boulevarde and directed traffic towards Arthur St for about an hour.

Commuter trains were thrown into chaos, with customers being warned of possible delays throughout the late afternoon and evening.

Images from Central station show crowds awaiting trains, which were slowly travelling on the T3 Bankstown line.

“Service disruption – Allow extra travel time due to an incident requiring emergency services at Punchbowl earlier,” warning signs read.

Commuters travelling towards Punchbowl will have to board all-tops services to Revesby, with several services cancelled.

Transport for NSW has since confirmed trains are running again between Bankstown and Campsie.

The incident also had a major effect on other train lines, with both T8 and T3 services running off-timetable and switching platforms.

Sydney Trains took to social media and advised commuters that replacement buses were being organised.

“Passengers are still advised to allow plenty of extra travel time,” a statement said.

“Passengers are also advised to listen to announcements and check information displays for service updates.”
