Waverley house fire: Boxing Day disaster as family home engulfed in flames

A family’s Boxing Day festivities have ended in disaster after their home was engulfed in flames.

A Sydney family’s Boxing Day festivities have ended in disaster after a fire engulfed their home in Waverley on Tuesday morning.

Fire and police crews in Randwick were dispatched at 10.50am after a triple-0 call regarding a Kent St property.

Upon arrival, crews witnessed a significant amount of smoke blanketing the street, while the house’s nine occupants had already left the property.

The fire initially started on the middle level of the three-storey home before later spreading to the upper floor. Both levels were severely damaged by the blaze.

The fire took about 90 minutes for crews to bring under control and than another half an hour before the fire was completely extinguished.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said a BBQ, which had been left running overnight and was outside the house, was believed to be the cause of the blaze; however, authorities were still investigating the fire’s origins.

Neighbouring properties were not affected by the fire; however, residents were forced to evacuate.

According to property records, the house was last sold for $2.77m in 2013.
