Traffic chaos after multiple crashes on Hawkesbury Bridge

Two serious car crashes on the Hawkesbury River Bridge on New Year’s Day resulted in traffic chaos for commuters.

NSW Police impressed with NYE behaviour

Two crashes on the Hawkesbury River Bridge caused early traffic chaos on New Year’s Day, with two of the three northbound lanes closed at Mooney Mooney.

On Sunday morning, Live Traffic NSW said on Facebook northbound traffic was “very heavy, with southbound traffic also slowing over the bridge.”

“If possible, northbound motorists should consider delaying their journey,” they said.

“Otherwise, allow plenty of extra travel time.”

By about midday traffic was beginning to clear, with Live Traffic NSW reporting that the cars involved in the crashes had been moved to the shoulder of the rest area off-ramp.

At around 1pm, they reported that the cars involved in the accident had been cleared.

“Traffic is still heavy in both directions but possible due to holiday traffic now, rather than this earlier crash, so continue to allow some extra travel time today,” Live Traffic NSW said.

NSW Police were contacted for comment.

On Friday afternoon, at about 4.40am on the South Coast, a woman died and four people were injured in a three-car pileup on the Princes Hwy in Corunna.

Police said a northbound Audi Q3 and a southbound Toyota Camry collided, causing a white Volkswagen to also crash.

The driver of the Camry, a 39-year-old woman, died at the scene.

Two teenage brothers, 15 and 18 respectively, were airlifted to Westmead Hospital and Westmead Children’s Hospital respectively.

Anyone with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers, while police said a report was being prepared for the coroner.
