A pair of Sydney tradies have described the dramatic moment they helped a panicking woman out of a burning house.

The pair were working at a home on William Street in Manly on Monday morning when they noticed the neighbouring house was on fire.

They were alerted to the blaze by a woman who lived there who screamed before running back towards the fire.

“The woman next door was screaming at the gate, and my worker Blair jumped over the fence and ran inside after her to check if anyone else was in there,” Bradley Turner said.

“When they got to the bedroom where the fire was, the flames were already to the ceiling, and the girl was standing there in a panic.

“Blair got her out of the house, she was screaming, couldn't talk, just crying, she probably had a panic attack.”

Officials said the woman was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation and transported from the scene in an ambulance.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital, an ambulance spokeswoman said.

The first firefighters arrived at the scene shortly before 8am and quickly realised the situation was serious.

“En route the crews noticed a lot of smoke in the area and escalated the response,” NSW Fire and Rescue Sperintendent Adam Dewberry said.

“The fire was contained to the rear of the home, although the front was also damaged by smoke and heat.

“The fire was knocked down in about 40 minutes.”

Mr Turner said his colleague, Blair Smith, 32, was shaken by the incident.

“He was in a bit of a panic and worried there was someone else inside, but he’s calmed down. He’s pretty good with that stuff,” Mr Turner said.

Mr Turner runs the decorative finishing company Pure Deco, where Mr Smith is employed, and had been working at the neighbouring home for a month when the incident happened.

Six firefighter crews attended the scene and finished their work shortly before 11am.

Police did not believe the fire was suspicious.
