A 10-day-old puppy has died after being discarded inside a styrofoam Esky in a western Sydney council clean-up pile on Tuesday morning.
The young dog was found by two passers-by who had looked through the pile of discarded goods on the front lawn of a vacant property on Carpenter St in Colyton, near Penrith.
Overnight on Tuesday, temperatures dropped to a low of 8C outside with a 1C wind chill.
RSPCA NSW was notified around 8.30am and the puppy was taken to their Yagoona centre where it underwent emergency veterinary treatment.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to his illness and did not survive.
“Puppies that young need the warmth from the mother and litter mates but being in the Esky was not enough protection for him,” an RSPCA spokesman said.
“Neonatal puppies are unable to thermoregulate, and exposure to these harsh weather conditions would have severely impacted the puppy‘s welfare,” RSPCA NSW wrote in a statement on Facebook.
Inside the Esky there was also a red Puma-branded T-shirt, a child-sized green singlet with a pineapple print and a padded cushion that is believed to have been part of a baby car seat.
Outraged members of the public took to the comment section of the RSPCA post to express their anger and disgust at the owners who dumped the puppy.
“This poor baby I hope it’ll be okay, how could someone do that to an innocent animal,” one Facebook user commented.
“Some home humans are so cruel,” wrote another user.
RSPCA NSW is hoping to get in touch with the two people who dropped the puppy off at their Yagoona centre.
“We urgently need people to come forward with information regarding this case so we can find what happened,” the spokesman said.
They are described as a tall caucasian male of a strong build, approximately 70-80 years of age, wearing a jacket and hat, and a tanned male of a regular build, accompanied by a yellow labrador with a harness and coat.
NSW Police is helping with the RSPCA inquiries.
