Afternoon commuters were held up for more than three hours today after a “trespasser” jumped onto the train tracks at a station in western Sydney.

Police rushed to the scene just after 4.30pm today to reports of a “trespasser on the tracks” between Parramatta and Westmead Station.

The incident affected almost the entire Sydney Trains network with the person forcing trains to be held at stations across the city.

NSW Police confirmed the incident had ended at 7.30pm and trains were back up and running.

“Major flow on delays will continue as trains start to resume again,” Sydney Trains warned.

The situation is being investigated as a mental health incident.

Footage seen by news.com.au showed a man running along the tracks before appearing to look over a train bridge and jumping back down.

“A police operation is underway at the O’Connell St overpass near Parramatta Railway Station. Specialist resources are on the way to the scene,” a Sydney Trains spokesperson said earlier.

Multiple train lines were affected by the incident, with the T1, T2 and T5 lines the worst impacted.

Trains that run on the line between Westmead and Parramatta were suspended in both directions with commuters stuck at Central Station for hours and some taking to social media to vent about being unable to get home.

An announcer at Central Station earlier said there were more than 30 trains stuck between Central and Parramatta and the onflow effects were impacting most lines.
