Man, 39, charged with assaulting frontline workers after security guards allegedly stabbed at Westmead Hospital in Sydney

Police have issued an update after two security guards were allegedly violently assaulted while trying to subdue a man at a hospital in Western Sydney.

A man has been charged with allegedly stabbing two security guards who were attempting to subdue him at a hospital in Western Sydney.

Police were called to Westmead Hospital about 11.30pm on Friday after reports staff had been attacked.

Two security guards, aged 24 and 25, were allegedly stabbed during the altercation.

They are in a stable condition.

A third security guard dislocated his shoulder while a male nurse, 29, suffered minor injuries.

NSW Police on Saturday afternoon confirmed a man, 39, was arrested and taken to Parramatta Police Station after remaining in hospital under police guard for some time.

The man has been charged with five offences including two counts of assault frontline health worker – actual bodily harm, assault frontline health worker – no actual bodily harm, common assault and use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc.

He will face Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.

“For the workers on the receiving end, the trauma will continue long after the physical scars have healed. For the last decade we have had shootings, stabbings and flesh torn from the bodies of our members.

“We have argued consistently for greater security numbers and powers, and will continue to push for this and better personal protective equipment. It is frustrating and mystifying that so many of the recommendations of the Anderson Inquiry into hospital security are yet to be implemented.”
