Residents urged to stay indoors as large fire burns in Sydney suburb
Residents have been urged to stay inside as firefighters battle a large shed and waste pile fire that has sent thick smoke into the air.
About 100 firefighters are battling a large shed and waste pile fire in Sydney’s south, with residents urged to stay indoors and keep windows and doors shut as a precaution.
The large rubbish fire in Lindsay St, Rockdale caught alight on Saturday morning, prompting emergency calls for help.
Fire crews and 20 fire fighting appliances attended the Cleanaway Resource Recovery Centre to extinguish the blaze.
An excavator has also been brought in to remove excess waste materials.
An Emergency Alert was issued for residents and visitors in the area, who were advised to remain indoors, close all windows, doors and vents and turn off air conditioning.
Local commuters were initially warned of traffic disruptions as crews remained on scene.
But, as thick smoke blankets the area, residents have been told to avoid Bay St, West Botany St, President Ave and The Grand Parade.
“Avoid the area, stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed as a precaution,” Fire and Rescue NSW said.
“Stay away from smoke. Close windows, doors and vents.”
