Residents of Glebe, Waterloo, Redfern and Marrickville told to get jabbed as soon as possible

Residents in four suburbs in central Sydney have been told to get vaccinated as soon as possible as coronavirus case numbers begin to soar.

NSW records 1480 COVID cases, nine deaths

Residents in four central Sydney suburbs have been told to come forward and get vaccinated as soon as possible, with case numbers rising fast.

The suburbs are lagging behind other Sydney areas and officials are urging residents to ensure vaccination rates go up.

NSW deputy chief health officer Marianne Gale urged residents in Glebe, Waterloo, Redfern and Marrickville to go get the jab.

“I’d like to encourage the residents of those suburbs as well to please come forward for vaccination,” she said.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the suburbs were areas where “we would like to see the vaccination rate go up” and that the communities “might be at risk of having more cases in the next few weeks”.

The Sydney Local Health District (LHD) has put up special Pfizer clinics nearby, and some walk-in appointments would be available.

Those clinics are at the Peter Forsyth Auditorium in Glebe, the PCYC in Marrickville, and the Wests Ashfield Leagues Club in Ashfield.

The Sydney LHD has offered priority Pfizer jabs to people between 16 and 59 who live in certain suburbs and a list of vaccination locations is available online.

There was also a warning to people living in Bonny Hills in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area.

Analysis of sewage there revealed traces of coronavirus, even though NSW Health isn’t aware of any cases in the area.

“If you do live locally, please be aware for symptoms and please come forward for testing,” Dr Gale said.

The suburbs of greatest concern remain those in Sydney’s hotspot local government areas (LGAs) in the southwestern and western parts of the city.

“We encourage residents of those areas to come forward for vaccination as soon as you can,” Dr Gale said.

“I’d also like to thank all residents of those 12 LGAs of concern in particular for coming forward. We’re seeing great vaccination numbers from people in those areas, which is fantastic.”
