Teen rescued after becoming stuck in stormwater drain

A teenager has been rescued after he became stuck in a stormwater drain while trying to retrieve a ball.

A teenager who became trapped in a stormwater drain after trying to retrieve a ball has been rescued.

Emergency services rushed to Chapel Rd at Bankstown, in Sydney’s southwest, about 10.55am on Tuesday to find the teenage boy trapped.

The boy had been playing with friends nearby when their ball went into the drain.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Craig Watkins said the boy “slipped and fell” into the drain while trying to retrieve a ball.

“He couldn’t climb out,” Mr Watkins said.

A rescue operation was immediately launched by both paramedics and Fire and Rescue NSW officers, as the teenager suffered from a fractured arm.

Officers made contact with the boy and treated his fractured arm before safely extracting him.

The teenager was taken to Bankstown Lidcombe Hospital in a stable condition.

“This is an unfortunate incident for the patient, but it has had a positive outcome given the danger that stormwater drains can present,” Mr Watkins said.
