Police free two children left inside hot car parked at Sydney shopping centre

Police smashed a window to rescue two young children who had been left inside a hot car in a shopping centre car park.

Police smashed a window to rescue two young children who had been left inside a hot car in a shopping centre car park.

Officers were called to the car park in Dee Why, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, after shoppers spotted the kids - aged one and four - inside the Honda on Monday.

Footage of the ordeal shows an officer using a his baton before switching to what appears to be a glass breaking emergency hammer.

The footage shows the mother returning to the car, running with bags of groceries, which is surrounded by police and shopping centre staff.

The children had been removed from the car shortly before she returned.

The woman was spoken to by police but has not been arrested or charged.

“After attempts to unlock the vehicle were unsuccessful, police broke the window to gain access,” NSW Police said.

“Two children – aged one and four – were located inside the vehicle and were assessed at the scene.”

Neither of the children were injured.

Earlier this month, a three-year-old boy died after his father accidentally left him in his car for about six hours on a 34C day.

Arikh Hasan was found dead in the back of a Toyota Corolla in Glenfield, in Sydney’s south west, on February 2.
