Oatlands tragedy: Mother of three kids killed by driver says she forgives him

An 11-year-old boy who survived the horror Oatlands car crash in February has woken from his two-month-long coma to learn via Google that the accident killed four of his cousins.

According to an exclusive report by the Daily Mail, Charbel Kassas is walking and talking, despite doctors’ initial fears he would never fully recover from injuries caused when a driver, alleged to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol, lost control of his ute on February 1.

In early April, Charbel woke after spending more than two months unconscious in Sydney’s Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Before his parents had the chance to tell him his relatives – Antony, 13, Angelina, 12 and Sienna Abdallah, 9, and Veronique Sakr, 11 – had been killed instantly by driver Samuel William Davidson, Charbel found out the news for himself when he searched for their names on the internet.

Relative David Mannah told the publication how his family wanted Charbel’s focus to be on his recovery.

“When he woke up he didn’t know that Antony, Angelina, Sienna and Veronique were dead, and the family hadn’t had a chance to tell him yet,” Mr Mannah said.

‘They wanted him to focus on his recovery but he picked up a phone that was next to his bed and googled their names.

“He was heartbroken, but he is doing OK now though and the good thing is that he is going to recover.”

Mr Mannah said Charbel, whose coma was originally expected to last at least six months, was “really lucky”.

Charbel’s uncle, Danny Abdallah, whose three children were killed in the crash, said that COVID-19 restrictions meant his family had been unable to visit his nephew, but they were in regular contact with the “walking miracle”.

“At the moment he’s awake, he’s speaking, he’s alert and he can see. His brain’s a little bit underdeveloped which is going to improve with time, but he’s walking,” Mr Abdallah said.

“This is all to do with these prayers, because his situation is a miracle. He’s a walking miracle.”

The 29-year-old driver who caused the accident was last month issued a string of new charges, having allegedly been high on a combination of MDMA and cocaine when he got behind the wheel of his vehicle after a day of drinking at the time of the crash.

Witnesses told police Mr Davidson and his 24-year-old passenger were acting erratically and were sticking their fingers out the window of the car at passing cars on Bettington Rd on their short journey back to Greens Ave.

Just seconds later, police allege Mr Davidson mounted the kerb and his ute smashed into the crowd of seven children.

He’s scheduled to next appear in court on June 11.
