‘It happened suddenly’: Man in his 20s dies of Covid as NSW records 233 new cases

A man in his 20s has died ‘suddenly’ from Covid-19 as NSW recorded another 233 new virus cases on Wednesday.

NSW records 233 new cases with 47 infectious in the community

Another 233 virus cases have been recorded in NSW including at least 47 who were infectious in the community while a man in his 20s has died from the virus.

NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant said the man died in his home in southwest Sydney.

“He was being cared for by the south western Sydney local health district during his isolation period and he’d reached the day 13,” she said.

“He was being followed up daily by nursing staff and suddenly deteriorated.”

His death is being referred to the coroner, Dr Chant said.

Dr Chant was asked why the man wasn’t in hospital and she said his condition deteriorated really quickly.

“He was being checked daily and he did complain of feeling a little fatigued but the deterioration happened suddenly,” she said.

“It is important that we understand that with Covid you can get sudden deaths and I think that is important to understand your health status can deteriorate.”

She said the man was living with one other person.

“You can imagine the trauma for that other person who has now been hospitalised,” Dr Chant said.

“That person also had Covid and that person has been hospitalised and offered all care.”

A woman in her 80s, from Sydney’s inner west, has also died.

She was being treated at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital after testing positive on July 27.

Dr Chant confirmed the woman had not been vaccinated, nor was the man in his 20s.

The new figures come after NSW Health issued a mammoth list of new exposure sites which were littered across 79 suburbs.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said more than 105,000 people were tested in the latest reporting period.

Of the new cases, 103 are linked to a known case or cluster – 79 are household contacts and 24 are close contacts.

The source of infection for 130 cases remains under investigation.

Ninety-two cases were in isolation throughout their infectious period and 21 were in isolation for part of their infectious period.

Forty-seven cases were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of 73 cases remains under investigation.

Ms Berejiklian was probed about why some retailers are staying open after NSW Health issued an enormous venue alerts list.

“Obviously the lockdown rules we have in New South Wales are some of the harshest our nation has seen,” she argued.

“We need people to remember every time they leave the house that they could have the virus or someone they come into contact with could have the virus.”

Dr Chant confessed the state was dealing with one of the most challenging times it had ever experienced.

“I would ask everyone to do their bit,” she said.

“This is not the time for going into five or six shops. The last thing our contact tracers want is that people have gone to this bakery, to this bread shop, to this butcher.

“Please do not go out and about.”
