NSW coronavirus outbreak affects young people with person in their 30s taken to ICU
A person aged in their 30s is one of several people in intensive care with coronavirus in NSW, with a shocking number of cases in hospital.
NSW intensive care doctors are treating seven Covid-19 patients, including a person aged in their 30s, officials have said.
A further 30 people have been hospitalised with the coronavirus disease, and two of the ICU patients are on ventilators.
Eight of the hospitalised people are under the age of 35.
Those numbers should be a “wake-up call” that proves Covid-19 is a serious disease that can impact young people as well, chief health officer Kerry Chant said.
“The fact that 37 patients have been admitted to hospital should indicate to the community the fact that Covid is … not a mild disease,” she said.
“It can be mild in some but for many it can lead to hospitalisation and death.”
Dr Chant said that 14 of the hospitalised people were under the age of 55.
“(This) should dispel the myth that this is something that only impacts on the elderly … A bit of a wake-up call to young people,” she said.
NSW recorded 27 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, as the highly contagious delta strain continues to rip through the Sydney community.
A lockdown that was slated to end this weekend will continue until July 16, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
