Sydney light rail issues resolved after ‘network-wide’ problems

All the light rail lines in Sydney were knocked offline by a network-wide communications issue.

Sydney siders warned of new train strikes over New Year’s Eve

All three Sydney light rail lines were knocked out of service for about an hour on Tuesday morning.

A notice posted by Transport for NSW said a “ network wide communications issue” was to blame.

The L1, L2 and L3 light rail lines were not operating. Transport for NSW are still working to figure out the exact cause in the late morning.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the cause was likely a power outage.

The outage caused varied issues across the three lines.

The radio lines were knocked out on L1, L1 and L2 lines lost power, and the CCTV on L2 and L3 went offline too.

The network’s signal system lost power in various spots too. The signboards that showed commuters when the next tram was coming went dark, and the public announcement speakers went silent.

Authorities organised replacement buses.

However, about an hour later, at 10.10am, the issue was resolved.

“L1, L2 and L3 light rail services are running again following a network-wide communications issue,” the update said.
