A man has been shot by police after he allegedly ran towards officers while armed with a meat cleaver.

A man in his 40s has been shot by police after he allegedly ran towards officers while armed with a meat cleaver.

Police were called to Hanbury Street in Mayfield, in northern Newcastle, at 4.10pm on Saturday following a report of a concern for welfare.

A man ran out of a unit block and ran towards the officers while he was allegedly armed with a meat cleaver.

One of the officers deployed a Taser, which was unsuccessful.

The man was then shot by police in the stomach.

Police rendered assistance to the man before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene.

The man was then rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

No one else was injured during the confrontation, which has been declared a critical incident.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting will be investigated by a critical incident investigation team.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
