Macarthur Hotel, Wests Leagues Club in Sydney close due to coronavirus

Coronavirus is spreading rapidly across NSW, forcing a number of Sydney venues to close and putting parts of the city on high alert.

Sydney is on high alert after another two venues were forced to close due to patrons with coronavirus visiting them.

The Wests League Club and the Macarthur Tavern, both in the city’s south-west, closed overnight after infected customers visited over the weekend.

Despite an increasing number of COVID-19 infections being linked to a Sydney pub cluster, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has ruled out sending her state back into lockdown.

Wests League Club in Leumeah, in the city's south-west, was closed just moments after the Macarthur Tavern in Campbelltown, also in the south west of Sydney, announced a case this morning.

Three cases have also now been linked to Planet Fitness gym in Casula, triggering an isolation warning for staff and patrons.

As previously reported, two men, aged 24 and 27, tested positive after attending the gym. An employee also worked while infectious, health authorities confirmed today.

In light of the three cases, NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant advised any staff or patrons that attended the gym between July 4 and July 10 to self-isolate for the next 14 days.

The isolation warning for anyone who attended the Crossroads Hotel between July 3 and July 10 also still stands with staff and patrons required to self-isolate for 14 days and get tested if they have symptoms.

Other venues attended by cases in the Crossroads Hotel cluster between July 4 and July 10 are also under investigation.

These include, Bankstown YMCA in Revesby, Woolworths in Bowral, Milky Lane in Parramatta, Bavarian Macarthur in Campbelltown, Macarthur Tavern in Campbelltown, West Leagues Club in Campbelltown.

Everyone who attended these venues at the times above should monitor for symptoms, and isolate immediately and seek testing if any symptoms develop.

Anyone who attended the Wests Leagues Club or the Macarthur Tavern are also advised to seek testing if they have any symptoms.

“The Wests League Club was last night advised by NSW Health that a person who has tested positive to Covid19 visited our Leagues Club on Friday evening at 8pm and this same person visited again in the early hours of Sunday morning (between 12am – 2:30am)," the club said in a statement.

“By the time that we re-open, there will have been over 100+ man hours of cleaning and sanitising from additional staff and contractors to ensure that our Club is cleaner than it has ever been.”

The Macarthur Tavern in Campbelltown announced its case this morning.

“The patron was in our venue on Saturday the 11th July between 9pm and 12 midnight,” the venue said on Facebook.

“We are working closely with NSW health on this case. Our patron’s safety is of utmost concern during these difficult times.

“We have had strict procedure in place to prevent and control the spread of this virus and these procedures will continue to be put into action.”

The tavern will be closed for deep cleaning until 3pm today when it plans to re-open.

“There is no requirement for the premises to shut down or for any member of staff or patron to self-isolate but they will need to remain vigilant for any respiratory symptoms and get tested immediately and self-isolate should symptoms develop,” the venue said.
