Ivan Milat transferred to the ICU as the notorious serial killer ‘prepares for death’

Australia’s worst serial killer is reportedly on the brink of death after being transferred to the ICU. He was given three months to live in May.

The day I met Ivan Milat

Ivan Milat is preparing to die as he waits under heavy guard in the ICU of Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital.

Milat, 74, has been in jail since his arrest in 1994 but has been in and out of hospital this year after he was diagnosed with terminal oesophagus and stomach cancer in May and given three months to live.

Corrective Services NSW said the 74-year-old was moved to a secure annex at the Prince of Wales Hospital on Friday but reportedly took a turn for the worse on Monday night.

Regarded as the nation’s worst serial killer, Milat has also undergone several medical procedures since May to help him eat and delay his death.

In May, Milat was taken from Goulburn’s Supermax jail to Randwick’s Prince of Wales Hospital, which confirmed he was dying from cancer. He has been ferried between the Sydney hospital and Long Bay jail since then to undergo chemotherapy.

The hospital wing at Long Bay does not provide chemotherapy, making his heavily guarded trips to Prince of Wales necessary.

After one of Milat’s first chemo treatments, detectives visited in jail to try to extract a confession — without success.

Serving seven life sentences for the horrific murders of seven backpackers, Milat has also been linked to at least a dozen other unsolved murders. He has always maintained his innocence, refusing to confess to killing the seven people police were able to convict him on.

Milat was found guilty of killing the backpackers over a period of four years, picking them up as they were hitchhiking before driving them to the Belanglo State Forest south of Sydney to murder them.

The Daily Telegraphreports Milat is under heavy guard in the hospital’s ICU with extra guards being rostered on to watch the brutal killer.

Health sources told the publication Milat had been moved from the hospital’s heavily guarded prison wing to the ICU this morning.

The 74-year-old had been making regular trips to the hospital since May and was filmed shuffling through the carpark in September with the help of a prison guard.

The video, taken by 7News, showed the notorious killer walking slowly out of the hospital before being put in a corrections van to return to Long Bay jail.

In May, Milat’s nephew Alistair Shipsey told Network Ten his uncle’s condition was “very bad” and speculated he had a couple of weeks to live.

Milat reportedly lost 20kg in the weeks after his diagnosis and hasn’t been able to eat or keep food down.

Milat was also convicted of kidnapping British tourist Paul Onions, who managed to escape from the serial killer’s vehicle.

NSW Police Minister David Elliot earlier already urged Milat to do “one last honourable thing on his deathbed” and openly answer questions relating to his crimes.

Mr Elliott also said Milat should assist police with any questions related to his crimes and any other cases police suspect he may have been involved with.
